You Can't Make This Stuff Up Department

The news that outgoing Vice President Dick Cheney will attend today’s inauguration as a wheelchair user is certainly ironic given the lack of accessibility that was incorporated in the event planning for citizens with disabilities.

A friend wrote this morning to suggest that Mr. Cheney probably hurt his back while hoisting a box of purloined documents. I prefer to think that he was lifting a box of encyclopedias–you know, now that he’s taking all his money and going to Dubai (wherefrom he cannot be extradited, etc.) he’s going to finish his education. He’s going to read about human rights while sitting in his loaner wheelchair. I just know it.

  1. Frida, Nothing is more frustrating than a person who tells me they were “in a wheelchair” for a finite period of time. If they learned anything they would keep their mouth shut. In this regard, I am glad those disability awareness days no longer include a stint of time using a wheelchair.

  2. The irony of reading about his wheelchair use in the news hit me hard after reading about the inacesssibility issues in your blog and William’s.
The scary part is that people often think that they get it after using a wheelchair for a few days. I haven’t commented in a while but have enjoyed reading your posts.

  3. Sometimes irony is sweet. I wonder if he will encounter any broken elevators or bus lifts today like other people with disabilities. Obama’s speech was inspiring. We may have a good president and world leader that recognizes the importance of science, art, music, and values peace for all people.
