Vidal, R.I.P.

 

 

My beloved second guide dog “Vidal” (pictured here just three years ago alongside his human appendage and looking ever so much smarter than the H.A.) has passed after having been diagnosed with a massive doggy prostate tumor. He was himself to the last, talking, eating biscuits, and enjoying the attention of his entourage. I am bawling like a baby and whispering Tibetan prayers of passage and hoping that Vidal is now in the company of my beloved first guide “Corky” and my beautiful Guiding Eyes “career change “Labrador “Roscoe” and who’s to say we are not the geniuses of imagination in our despair?

  2. Sorry to hear about Vidal, Steve. I remember him as a remarkably well-behaved dog. I’m enormously fond of my own two Labs — a Chocolate named Toby and my Black Lab named Jasmine. Sorry to hear of your loss.

  3. Those we lose to death are never really gone. People or animal friends, they live in our memories, giving us smiles each time we remember them. Vidal and Corky play with Mugs and Nessie, Hector and Ollie, Dad and Uncle Walt. Hugs to you, Steve.

  5. I am so sorry that he’s gone. There has to be a special place in heaven or the afterlife for assistance dogs–and yes, of course they’d be together.

  7. I am so sorry for the loss of your dear companion. It sounds as if all of you who loved Vidal guided him through his passage gently and lovingly, a fine tribute.

  9. oh no, Steve. I’m heartbroken. I’m so sorry that Vidal died. I know he was an amazing companion to you, but he also was an amazing friend to so many other people. I remember, the day after Kerry conceded the 2004 election, sitting in your office scanning documents for you with only Vidal as company (I don’t remember where you had gone) and feeling like your books and Vidal by my side were the best company I could every have hoped for. So thank you for sharing him with all of the rest of us. He will always always be one of my most favorite dog friends.
