—in memory of guide dog Corky
She brings me my shoes, separately, one by one
And drops them softly on the counterpane
As if to say: a day is here
With all the colors of waking
Seeing I didn’t know
Knowing my tangled dream
A man in late middle age
Caught with Edgar Poe
His shadows moving to and fro
At windows
A day of high wind
So one by one
I slip my feet inside.
