A Brief Homage to the Gods of Chance

Stephen Kuusisto wearing a fedora and trench coat, standing beside a dragon in Kyoto, Japan

It was the gods of chance

Brought me back here

There’s no mistaking them

They’re crippled also

**

Somewhere in the distance,

That old fashioned medicine…church bells…

**

I love you teddy bear

Though now you’re in the landfill

**

Once I wrote a folk song about how Thomas Edison ruined my life

**

The broken gods brought me here and gave me to my broken parents. And look! I’m having a perfectly broken life. But I do persist in trying to put tiny machines together.

**

In poem-village all the horses graze on sweet grass

**

They are writing poems in the next village

The people there are admiring clouds
